HIV has exsited in the United States for decades and was said to have originated fro chimapzees in Africa. Since then, there have been many medical developments to help poeple who are affected by AIDS and HIV. There are not only medical developments but many organizations such as Big Bend Cares provide emotional support as well.

Here Are Some Statistics to begin:

  • More than 1.1 million people live with HIV in the United States, 24% are women.

  • Women accounted for 20% of new infections in 2010.

  • Most women are infected through heterosexual sex

  • About 50,000 people get infected with HIV each year.  

  • In 2010, there were around 47,500 new HIV infections in the United States.

Ethnicity/Race:

  • By the end of 2010, more than half of the people living with HIV were African American

  • Black women accounted for 65% Data shows that 1/32 African Americans will be diagnosed with HIV in their life time.

HIV can be prevented in multiple ways. The simple awareness of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus can steer people away from actions that may lead them to contracting the virus. In addition, wearing protection or abstaining from sex may also prevent HIV contraction. Big Bend Cares is big on prevention of the STD, as the organization holds courses on how to prevent the disease and distributes free condoms.
